I'm glad yo...Anonymous, on consumer sentiment. I'm glad you made that point. I think it's as big a factor as anything Glenn Stevens might say about an impendin rate rise. Abbott and the Coalition have raised such a cloud of doubt over climate change and the carbon tax, ably supported by the media, that they have more than half the population agreeing with them. Naturally it would dampen confidence, and encourage people to save against the horrific future they think they are facing with high unemployment and price increases when the government's carbon plan goes ahead. You are right too that if poor consumer confidence does real harm to the economy Abbott and Co. will blame the government's toxic tax! When, of course, it's Tony Abbott who's toxic and not the tax!Patricia Wahttp://polliepomes.wordpress.com/2011/06/13/it%e2%80%99s-tony-abbott-who%e2%80%99s-toxic-not-the-tax-2/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8434369190746987531.post-54637150146595197882011-06-16T12:11:05.152+10:002011-06-16T12:11:05.152+10:00Consumer sentiment is down (although I am against ...Consumer sentiment is down (although I am against rampant consumerism) and retail chains are closing. I am suprised that the business / retail sector are not cranky with the coalition and their contribution to this. Abbott, with his constant gloom and doom predictions about jobs and prices, makes people cautious, anxious and fearful of the future. I have not seen this point raised anywhere. I am sure Labor were accused of this when/if they ran negative lines on the economy. Love your blog.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8434369190746987531.post-29011278574852367212011-06-16T11:30:15.015+10:002011-06-16T11:30:15.015+10:00The seeming inability of the Federal Labor Governm...The seeming inability of the Federal Labor Government to defend itself reminds me very much of the Kirner Government in Victoria some years ago. I would like to see some, or all, of question time devoted to setting the record straight in a methodical way, for instance by citing the analyses that have been done on the Insulation Program, the BER and so on. The mythology that has been deliberately built up by the Coalition, and their backers, about the competence of the Government needs to be tackled over and over - even to the point of boring everyone. I'd like to see some Dorothy Dixers about the Auditors Reports etc. answered at length, even if the whole of one question time was taken up by the one issue. <br />I'm also increasingly annoyed at the Speaker giving latitude to Christopher Pyne's Points of Order. In the previous Coalition Government I'm sure the Speaker had the capacity to turn the microphone off so the deliberate insults in the guise of the POA were cut off.Alistair Baillieu-McEwannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8434369190746987531.post-35492616373116840802011-06-16T10:45:14.732+10:002011-06-16T10:45:14.732+10:00The response of the media on the non-issue of Roxo...The response of the media on the non-issue of Roxon's office sending out invitations to a function to a tobacco company is a classic example of the 'much ado about nothing' trend Tanner writes about in Sideshow. As soon as it became clear that no tobacco executive attended the fund-raiser, the media should have made the judgement that it was a non-issue and stopped reporting on it. They would have been able to use the space to report on something substantive that was relevant to health public policy. Mark Metherell - a well-respected and informed specialist health reporter - was one of those who gave the story legs. Why Mark why? http://www.theage.com.au/national/roxon-tobacco-wrangle-deepens-20110615-1g3yc.html#ixzz1PNlPFksf. Virginia Trioli also raved on about it in an interview with Roxon. It really does matter that the public space gets filled with these non-stories, as it means the real issues don't get air play.John Gossnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8434369190746987531.post-8104751161600694992011-06-16T09:36:44.338+10:002011-06-16T09:36:44.338+10:00Grog another great piece, thankyou.

For example, news corp has a strangle hold on the media in Australia, (most states if not all). There are laws on what you can report and how.. that news corp trys to push to the limit.<br />So if the current govt wanted to make deep changes to the media laws on content, balance and ownership where would news corp go to lobby. They have destroyed, burnt, blown up or poisoned any one in federal govts access. <br />It would be funny to see the head of news going to the USA and saying 'well we got Abbot's polls up two years before an election but half of your Australian interests have been closed down or sold off...bugger.Russell in Glendalenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8434369190746987531.post-37555427043652360842011-06-16T09:30:05.220+10:002011-06-16T09:30:05.220+10:00Yes, what a pity Abbott didn't have the nerve ...Yes, what a pity Abbott didn't have the nerve to take Roxon on in QT or that the the government didn't hand her a Dorothy Dixer so she could get stuck into him boots'n all.
