When he loses his temper at the end, my well of empathy comes a a gusher and flows down my cheeks. And then when his community rally around him, and he sees his life has been worth it after all, that he's not a failure, well golly gosh, it is as profound as any sermon.

But is it, I wonder, a bloke thing? I notice it was written by a woman. My wife cried along with me when she watched it with me last time. Perhaps they were tears of sympathy for me!

That's what makes it a great film. It drills down to the emotional trauma of life. And what a loser I am for weeping...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8434369190746987531.post-6191578285605484372011-11-24T20:55:24.595+11:002011-11-24T20:55:24.595+11:00What a shame film posters today aren't nearly ...What a shame film posters today aren't nearly as affectionate and welcoming as this little creation.Nichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04456790792163655280noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8434369190746987531.post-29921288072590655492011-05-17T22:02:47.365+10:002011-05-17T22:02:47.365+10:00Anon - The Shop Around the Corner is magical. It was more a question of doing what is right rather than what is profitable. George may have had struggles but you see a life much more fulfilling than that of a bitter Potter. I reckon a few of those aspirationals on 150k plus should watch and consider true value.Dongnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8434369190746987531.post-56160344374078732452011-05-16T01:57:21.280+10:002011-05-16T01:57:21.280+10:00Great review. It's one of the few films that has had a lasting effect on me.

It's such a classic and I wish it had more of a presence here during the TV rounds at Christmas time. Perhaps it wouldn't have meant as much though had I seen it for the first time as a child and not as an adult.Brihttp://www.twitter.com/cheerfulcynicnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8434369190746987531.post-84631570878645812122011-05-15T21:50:47.207+10:002011-05-15T21:50:47.207+10:00One of my all time favorites. I suppose it's the time of year you consider your choices in life.

I would also recommend The Shop Around the Corner (starring an even younger James Stewart) if you haven't seen it. A fantastic rom-com.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
